The IFB AdiposityDiseases is a center that combines the research and treatment of a socially relevant disease. In Leipzig the focus is on obesity (adiposity) and its associated diseases such as type II diabetes, arteriosclerosis, fat tissue disorders, and fatty liver. Because of the tight interconnectedness of basic and patient-focused research, new treatment options will develop over the coming years that are more effective than the current ones. The IFB benefits from regional and federal cooperations with medical and research institutions.

Organisation

The IFB AdiposityDiseases is an independent center of the University Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig without having any legal capacity. The Dean of the Medical Faculty together with the board of directors of the University Hospital are resonsible. The IFB AdiposityDiseases is independent from any clinics and institutes and holds an own administration and organisation structure. An elected board of directors leads business operations. The board of directors consists of the managing director and the scientific director. The members of the IFB AdiposityDiseases elect among themselves the members of the board of directors, of the student career board and of the internal review board. Members with voting power are all scientists of our research projects, IFB professors and IFB junior research groups. Associated institutions can sent representatives to the general meeting.

Ideal conditions for young researchers

An innovative organisational structure with flat hierarchies and elected committees enables young outstanding researchers to carry out scientific ideas on their own. The IFB started with 19 research projects and has over 60 in 2014. Presently about 140 staff members work at the IFB. The whole center and its projects are evaluated by an external advisory board that consists of international experts. The IFB is an independent center that is supported by the University of Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig AöR - without having any legal capacity. Due to the close cooperation of different research areas synergistic effects are created (interaction of research results), that benefit research and treatment alike. Unique multiplicity of adiposity research in Germany

The IFB AdiposityDiseases is the only center in Germany that investigates and treats obesity to the extend represented in Leipzig. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is supporting the IFB with about 24 million Euros for five years (2010-2015). It is possible that the support will be granted for a further five years if the work is successful (2015-2020). The IFB AdiposityDiseases is relying on the medical and scientific expertise in the field of metabolic diseases that has been established for years.
